Sherpas speak a Tibetan language rather than the national Nepali language and they have no written language. Sherpas, mountain people have learned to live in steep, isolated and sometimes dangerous landscapes. Sherpas get from place to place on foot paths. That means where ever they need to transport anything such as firewood, produce or building materials, it goes on their yaks or their back.

Many Sherpas, especially poorer ones, carry heavy loads from a young age. Some Sherpas also earn extra money as porters on mountain climbs. While most visitors to the region would suffer from altitude sickness, due to lack of oxygen delivered to tissues. Sherpa's bodies are acclimated to it.
